Election Commission cancels Tiruvarur Assembly by-poll

Political parties had expressed reserveration over the conduct of the bypoll in view of the Gaja cyclone relief measure in the district.

The Election Commission has decided not to hold the Tiruvarur by-election, slated for January 28.
The by-election notification now stood rescinded, according to Satyabrata Sahoo, Tamil Nadu Chief Electoral Officer.
As a consequence of the cancellation of the  notification, actions and steps taken by the Returning Officer for the constituency were "declared null and void," according to a communication sent by the Election Commission to Mr Sahoo on Sunday.
Ever since the Commission announced a week ago that it would hold the by-election, sections of political parties had expressed reservations on the ground that the by-poll would come in the way of implementation of relief measures in areas hit by the Gaja cyclone were being undertaken.
Communist Party of India's national secretary  and MP, D.Raja, gave a petition to the Commission, seeking cancellation of the notification.
After the Commission's directive, Tiruvarur Collector and District Election Officer L. Nimal Raj held a meeting on Saturday with political parties, which had all demanded that the by-election be deferred.
Earlier, Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam and the Amma Makkal Munnetra Kazhagam had announced their nominees for the by-poll.
